The creative force behind Atelier Collins John is Jilly Collins. After fifteen years designing and making high end millinery, Jilly has turned her talents to include creating handbags, scarves and wraps alongside her hats. Producing accessories using unusual, and often fabricated materials and diverse embellishments, Jilly, a granddaughter of the famous painter Augustus John, attributes the flamboyance and style of these pieces to her theatrical background.
Inspired by an eclectic range of influences, architecture, nature, fashion, history, film and theatre, Jilly is fascinated by fabric manipulation and surface decoration. Colour plays an important part in her designs. Vibrant jewel-like colours, the perennially smart black and white or a cohesive neutral palette, all are to the fore in individual items. Accessories and embellishments can be as formal or informal as required but always stylish and sassy.
Most creations are "one offs" or a limited edition of two or three, subject to fabric availability, and can usually be made in any colour, exactly to the client’s requirements in terms of size, fabric, decoration, attachment etc. Bespoke commissions with creative ideas from customers are welcomed.
